This estate started making wine in the 1950s, and the family history includes many famous names, not the least among them begin winemaker Luciano Pira. This is considered by many to the best Barolo vintage in a long time, and it is rare to find top bottles still available, much less one with this kind of value. Wines at this level routinely fetch more than $100 / bottle while not being even close to the same quality level. This is a bona-fide deal.
From Parker’s Wine Advocate: “This wine is a true beauty. In this release of 5,240 bottles, the 2016 Barolo Cerretta takes that Nebbiolo purity and intensity up a significant notch, especially when you compare this cru to Schiavenza's classic Barolo and its Barolo made with fruit sourced across Serralunga d'Alba. You get a lot of expressive clarity here, with a pristine delivery that puts emphasis on wild berry fruits, blood orange, rusty earth and even a touch of bitter cacao. I love the manner in which all those aromas pile together in such a nicely layered manner.”
