Back in the day, by which I mean about 15 years ago, Evening Land burst upon the scene and combined Hollywood money and superstar French winemaking into a real force in Oregon, grabbing record scores (for the times), proving that chardonnay could be a force here, and shaking up the vineyard scene by locking up the respected Seven Springs Vineyard with a 45 year lease. Remember all that?
Dominique Lafon may have consulted, but the wine on the ground was made by Isabelle Meunier, another French winemaker who actually lives here. When that whole scene disintegrated under the weight of the baggage attached to founder Mark Tarlov, Meunier moved on.
Specifically, she moved on to Lavinea where, with founder Greg Ralston, she is turning out serious, stylish and highly desirable pinot noirs from some of Oregon’s best vineyards. This is concentrated, finely structured, and has all the complexity and depth one could ask for. Decant for current drinking, but hide a couple in the cellar for even greater rewards.
From Suckling: “This is toned between red and blue fruit with cherry and blueberry, as well as a red-plum edge. Very pure, ripe and vivid nose. The palate has impressive depth and build with ripe dark-cherry and plum flavors driving a long, composed statement of quality pinot noir. This is impressive. Drink or hold.”
