Okay, this is Italian, but it is NOT Nebbiolo. This is Nerello Mascalese grown on the slopes of the (currently erupting) Mt. Etna, on the island of Sicily. The old, deep volcanic soils here produce wines that have flavors strongly reminiscent of Nebbiolo, combined with the super-fine tannins and racy acidity of grand cru Burgundy -- really fascinating to drink. Etna reds have become a particular interest of mine in the past few years, and this a fantastic effort from the single best producer on the volcano.
From Suckling: “The purity of fruit and brightness is very impressive with blackberry, cherry and walnut undertones. It’s full, very tight and complete with really fine, polished tannins and a beautiful, long finish. Really balanced. Drink or hold.”
